The equipment sale has ended. As of today, 17 items (out of 221) have been sold. The donation committee has found an intermediary who is going to sell the remaining items on a consignment basis. We believe that engaging the services of a professional will result in a better return for MCACS, and allow us to focus our volunteer hours on activities more closely aligned with our mission. Please read the terms of the sale as described below. We have been receiving some offers that are closer to an eBay starting bid than a reasonable offer for the listed item. This is more like a sealed-bid auction than an eBay auction.

While no reasonable offers will be refused, we have an obligation to MCACS to sell this donated equipment at a price close to the fair-market value. As stated below, please make the best offer that you would be willing to pay for the item. For those who have already done that, we thank you.

–ORIGINAL INTRODUCTION–

MCACS is conducting a sale of Amateur Radio-related equipment donated by a long-time friend and MCACS member — Ben Acton, K3RYR — who recently became a silent key. His desire was that we “get this gear to people who can make use of it”, while also providing financial support to MCACS.

MCACS a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization registered in the state of Maryland. Our mission is to develop and maintain a cadre of volunteers who are qualified and equipped to provide a wide range of supplemental telecommunications services supporting Montgomery County, Maryland during civil emergencies. MCACS resources may also be made available to other jurisdictions in times of need. We invite you to learn more about us by browsing our website.

In addition to the items donated by K3YRY, we have added several items that were previously donated to MCACS by a member who is downsizing. However, we want to emphasize that MCACS is not in the “business” of selling used ham gear. This is a limited effort to take advantage of the generosity of our members. Because our website has limited visibility outside our membership, we encourage you to tell your friends about this sale!

Before browsing the list of equipment for sale, please review the following general considerations:

While items have not been individually tested for full operation, based upon historical knowledge, all equipment is understood to have been in working condition when last used unless otherwise noted. Item-specific additional info/testing may be provided upon request.
Where we list items with quantity greater than 1, you can make an offer on one or multiple items.
MCACS will be following a best-offer approach on items. This is a hybrid between a sale and an auction. We intend for each item to be advertised for sale for a minimum of two weeks. After that two-week period, we will generally accept the best offer received. However, we reserve the right to reject offers that, in our sole judgment, are far below fair market value based on comparable listings on well-known Amateur Radio trading websites.
Our rationale for this approach is as follows: we want this equipment to be out of our basements and in the hands of fellow hams who will make good use of it. And we want you to feel that you got a good deal. However, also consider that your purchase will benefit our community and amateur radio in general. Please keep those competing factors in mind when deciding what a reasonable offer might be.
Our desire is to sell the gear to local hams who are able to consummate their purchases in person. Local pickup and then transfer to others hams would be acceptable but beyond the scope of the MCACS donation committee. Its anticipated local pickup will occur at a predetermined interval from an MCACS location to be announced. We would like to avoid the twin hassles of arranging shipping to distant buyers and dealing with the many scammers who inhabit online marketplaces.
We can accept payment via cash, PayPal and Zelle.
A common mistake that people make is that the purchase price is tax-deductible when making a purchase from a not-for-profit organization like MCACS. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The donor of the equipment gets to make the tax deduction. The buyer is obtaining something for fair market value, so no deduction! And most of the items we are selling are of such low value that it wouldn’t be worth the bother, anyway. But every little bit of income helps us to keep doing what we do.
